Tillicum, Lakewood

Tillicum is a neighborhood located in the southern part of Washington bordered by the Tacoma Country and Golf Club to the north, Camp Murray to the south, Fort Lewis to the East, and American Lake to the west. The neighborhood's landmarks include Thornewood Castle and Harry Todd Park.

History

Tillicum was settled in the early 1900s as a community providing services to visitors who came for recreation on American Lake. In 1917, Pierce County, Washington donated the adjoining land to the east of Tillicum to the United States Army for construction of what was then called Camp Lewis. The need for military housing was a major factor in the residential development of Tillicum.[1]
